Relaxation Tips
Where to turn when daily stresses threaten to spoil your day.
“Stress is a constant companion for most women,” writes Dr. Pamela Peeke in her new book, Body for Life for Women (Rodale Books). But stress can be manageable when you allow yourself time off to relax and channel your energy in the right direction.
Too often, women turn to junk food when they are overwhelmed. Hold it right there, suggests Peeke, a fitness expert and member of the PepsiCo Blue Ribbon Advisory Board. It’s time to post the “Stress Rx” signs.
Tape a sign to the fridge or pantry that reads: “Stop! The answer is NOT in here,” suggests Peeke. Instead, put signs that read: “The answer is in here!” on your workout bag, bath salts, favorite relaxing CD, a flavorful herb tea or the phone.
When you are at that crossroads, go toward what will really soothe your pain—your treadmill, your exercise gear—not food. Give yourself a license to chill, advocates Peeke. Relax with meditation, yoga or tai chi. A class is best, because you’ll likely stick to it and learn the right way, but you can also decompress at home. Find a quiet place for 10–20 minutes, if possible, or do 5-minute mini-meditations throughout the day. Stop what you are doing and be still. Look downward and gaze. If your eyes become heavy, shut them. Breathe deeply and rhythmically.
When life throws you a curve, take a time out. Regroup, refocus and don’t let the stress go to your head or your tummy.
Other strategies to relax:
- Make a cup of hot tea, sip and enjoy without any distractions.
- Draw a bath with your favorite scents and light a candle.
- Play a soft CD and turn out all the lights.
- Be thankful for what is going well in your life and write it down.
- Call a friend who you can count on to nurture and support you.
