Commitment in Schools
For many years, PepsiCo has been a proud sponsor and supporter of in-school programs for students that promote health and wellness. Here are just a few:
America on the Move™
Champions of the “energy balance” concept, PepsiCo and America On the Move teamed up to develop classroom lesson plans, titled “Balance First™,” to teach the concept of energy balance in schools. In the 2004–05 school year, these lesson plans reached over 2.5 million U.S. students in 6,250 elementary schools in participating districts. Each lesson was developed with America on the Move’s support, and input from elementary school administrators, teachers and experts in nutrition and physical activity. The America on the Move web site also gives educators the opportunity to become good role models by getting involved personally-either as an individual or as part of a group-with several interactive tools to set and achieve fitness goals. The Cooper Institute
The Institute’s FITNESSGRAM®/ACTIVITYGRAM® software is a comprehensive educational tool for fitness and activity assessment and promotion in physical education. It helps students understand the components of health-related fitness, set individual goals and develop patterns of lifelong physical activity. A grant from the PepsiCo Foundation helps make it possible for teachers to track students’ progress towards achieving the President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports Presidential Active Lifestyle Award. For more information, visit www.fitnessgram.net.
Get Active, Stay Active at www.getactivestayactive.com.
Created in partnership with PE Central and PepsiCo, this web site helps students keep track of their daily activity through a personal exercise log. This tool helps teachers show their students the impact that exercising can make on their lives. Students also track their progress towards the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award.
P.E.4LIFE
This non-profit organization, supported by Gatorade, is determined to make quality, daily physical education a reality in each of our nation’s schools. The program emphasizes fitness and well-being, rather than athleticism, and exposes kids to the fun and long-term benefits of physical activity. For more information, visit www.pe4life.com.
Gatorade High School Athletes Award Program
In athletics programs across the country, Gatorade works with high school coaches in motivating their teams and recognizing their most outstanding athletes. Awards include the Gatorade Player of the Year, Gatorade Rookie of the Year, and Gatorade Will to Win Athlete. More than 55,000 high school coaches participate in this program, allowing 1.3 million high school athletes to be eligible for $300,000 in college scholarships. Gatorade has also honored the top high school student-athletes in each state and nationally in ten sports with Gatorade Player of the Year Awards. The Gatorade Player of the Year program has been ongoing for 19 years. Winners include Peyton Manning, Lisa Leslie and Alex Rodriguez. For more information, visit www.gatorade.com.
Women’s Sports Foundation
As a national partner of the Women’s Sports Foundation, Gatorade has created the GoGirlGo Ambassador program to enlist teen athletes to become activists for young women’s health and fitness. Ambassadors will be rewarded with scholarships and sports equipment for mentoring a “Lil’ Sis” and organizing activity-based programs in schools and communities. Gatorade and The Women’s Sports Foundation have made it our goal to get one million inactive girls moving next year. More information is available at www.gogirlgo.com.
ASFSA Wellness
We encourage American School Foodservice Association members to add healthy habits to their lives-not just for their own benefit, but to serve as “active examples” for kids in their school. PepsiCo’s Smart Spot products sponsor an Interactive Wellness System (IWS) found on the ASFSA Web site. The IWS web site provides members with the tools and information needed for assessing health risks, improving balanced behaviors, choosing balanced food, tracking their energy expenditure and making informed, healthy choices. Participants can also elect to become a Wellness Champion by promoting fitness and a positive attitude to students, co-workers and their community. Members have free, unlimited access to the IWS site at www.asfsa.org by clicking on wellness system.
